The Benefits of Bathroom
Renovations: Wellington

One of the biggest benefits of bathroom renovations is increased home value. A beautiful, updated bathroom can greatly enhance the appeal and value of your home, should you decide to sell in the future.

Additionally, renovating your bathroom can also lead to improved functionality and comfort. New fixtures or layout changes can make the space more enjoyable and user-friendly for you and your family.

Furthermore, renovation projects allow for the opportunity to make green choices and upgrade to energy efficient appliances, potentially leading to lower utility bills in the long run.

Overall, bathroom renovations can be a worthwhile investment both financially and for day-to-day enjoyment of your home.

Bathroom Renovations Items

One option for bathroom renovations is grout and tile cleaning. This involves removing built-up dirt and grime from the surfaces, leaving them looking fresh and new. Another possibility is installing a showerdome, which helps to prevent steam build-up in the shower and keeps the area dry. Silicone replacement can also improve the longevity and function of showers and baths.

If you want to give your bathroom a facelift, tile or shower glass restoration may be the answer. These changes can completely transform the look of your space.

There are plenty of options when it comes to renovating your bathroom. Consider what improvements will not only enhance the appearance, but also improve the functionality of your space.

Wellington

Wellington, the capital city of New Zealand, is known for its vibrant arts scene and picturesque waterfront. It’s made up of several diverse neighbourhoods, including CBD (Central Business District), Te Aro, Mt. Victoria, Thorndon, and Newtown.

CBD is where you’ll find government buildings as well as trendy cafes and bars. Te Aro is a creative hub with art galleries and indie shops. Mt. Victoria offers beautiful views of Wellington harbour and the surrounding hills. Thorndon is an historic neighbourhood with Victorian-style architecture. And Newtown is a cultural melting pot with a diverse array of ethnic eateries and markets.

Despite being relatively small in size, Wellington has a population of over 200,000 people. Its compact layout and abundance of green spaces make it a highly walkable and livable city. And with its proximity to nature, including beaches and hiking trails, as well as its thriving cultural offerings, it’s no wonder Wellington is consistently ranked as one of the world’s most liveable cities.

Pro Group NZ proudly services all areas of Wellington for your bathroom renovation needs.

FAQ

  • How long will my shower be out of action if I have it restored?

This really depends on what is being replaced/restored as there are curing times between stages. The work can take anywhere from a day to 5 days, and once completed you will need to allow the products to cure for 2-3 further days.

If you have more than one shower being restored it is best to do them one at a time so you have one in operation at all times.

  • After Coloursealing how much easier will it be to clean the grout?

The Colourseal coating is totally stainproof. Any oils, grease, spilt wine, etc will simply wipe off with a mild detergent and a soft cloth. That doesn't mean dirt won't build up on the surface if you do not maintain it with your regular cleaning routine, but it will be much easier to maintain.

  • Are there any areas not suitable for Colourseal?

We do not recommend Colourseal in areas that are exposed to lying water because it softens slightly when wet for long periods. This can make it susceptible to damage if scrubbed or abraded. Shower bases (that don't get dried after each use) and outdoor patios (that can remain wet for extended periods in the winter) will be much more resilient regrouted using epoxy grout.

  • How will grout recolouring hold up to dogs in the house?

Our Colourseal is very resilient, but could be damaged by dogs claws. It is an easy process to touch up damaged spots and your GroutPro specialist can even leave you with some touch up product for you to do this yourself.

  • How do I tell if my grout just needs a professional clean or it’s time to replace it?

This can be tricky to determine just by looking at it. Your GroutPro specialist will test the grout for strength and integrity and advise you if a clean and seal will be sufficient, or whether it is past its use-by date.

  • Are your specialists qualified?

    Great question.

Most of the services The ProGroup offer require no formal qualifications, but every franchisee goes through full training in the services they provide. Ongoing experience and a fantastic support network within the group mean that each of our team are true specialists at what they do.

Some of our team also offer services outside of the core ProGroup range, and some of them do require certification or specialist qualifications. In that situation they will have the relevant recognised quals. For example we have LBP builders, plumbers, stonemasons, and gasfitters within the team.

  • What are your payment terms?

These vary depending on the service.

Typically lower value work requires full payment on completion. Product heavy work may require a deposit at time of quote acceptance, while longer term projects may require an initial deposit and progress payments along the way.

The terms of your particular situation will be discussed at time of the quote so there will be no hidden surprises.

  • Who will come and do the work?

Our specialists are all independently owned franchisees who live in your local community. Most are sole operators, who will quote the job and do the work themselves, while others may have an employee or two to help with the workload. Either way, everyone is well trained in the services they offer.

You can expect prompt, courteous, knowledgeable trades people to help with your enquiries. And all live and work within your local area.

  • What will it cost to renovate my bathroom?

This really depends on the extent of the renovation.

A full deconstruction and remodel including new tiles and new fixtures could cost tens of thousands of dollars. Renewing tiles in particular would require removal of all the fixtures, removal of the existing tiles (and likely the wallboard behind), re waterproofing of any wet areas, before installing the new tiles.

If the tiles themselves are able to be saved, a tidy up of the existing grout, replacement of the silicone, and restoration of the existing shower glass by GroutPro could be done for a fraction of that amount.

  • How do I replace the silicone in my shower?

Silicone is used in tiled showers to provide a flexible joint between the floor and the walls, and sometimes the glass panels. It breaks down with time and is subject to going mouldy due to the high moisture levels in a shower. Typically, silicone may last a couple of years in a new shower but needs to be replaced regularly in older showers.

Removing and replacing silicone is a specialist job requiring very sharp blades. There is serious risk of damaging waterproofing membranes and scratching surfaces if not done correctly. GroutPro replaces dozens of showers worth of silicone every day so give us a call to get this job done properly.

  • Can I put a Showerdome on my tiled shower?

Yes you can however we do not recommend them for tiled showers. This is because a tiled shower contains grout and silicone which will harbour mould if it remains constantly wet. A showerdome keeps the moisture inside the shower enclosure and doesn't allow the shower to dry out when not in use.

This is not an issue for acrylic showers because there is no silicone of grout to go mouldy.

  • How can I fix stained grout?

Traditional grout easily stains when it has not been sealed. Soap, oils, spills, and general dirt will all soak into unsealed grout, and over time is it not possible to remove the staining. GroutPro Colourseal is a coating for grout that is designed to recolour the grout (to any colour you want) and seal it to prevent future staining.

GroutPro's Colourseal is the only grout recolourant product that is breathable meaning it can be used in wet areas such as showers. Other similar products are not breathable which means they will start to peel off wet grout.

  • Can you repair a leaking shower?

This depends on the leak and the construction of the shower.

If a shower is leaking through a wall into an adjacent room, there is a failure with the waterproofing membrane behind the tiles. This cannot be repaired without a major deconstruction of the shower and can be very costly. Simply replacing failed grout and silicone, which may look like it is waterproofed the area, is not a solution that can be guaranteed.

If the leak is within the bathroom (shower enclosure to bathroom floor), it may simply be that a silicone seal has deteriorated and needs to be replaced.

GroutPro often finds that leaks are actually attributed to plumbing failures.

  • What should I clean my grout with?

Unless your grout has been sealed properly there is nothing that will keep it clean. Many people resort to bleach or even acids to try and remove stains which will, in fact, damage the grout. GroutPro specialises in sealing the grout so that mild eco-friendly cleaners are all that is needed to keep it looking in tip top condition. If your grout is already stained we can recolour it and seal it with our Colourseal sealer.

  • How long does silicone stay mould free in a shower?

There is no easy answer to this question as it comes down to your daily maintenance process. Moisture, heat, and soap residue are what mould thrives on, so in order to minimise growth we recommend ensuring a good extractor fan is used during showering, and that you wipe your shower dry after each use. This removes the conditions that mould needs to grow.

When a shower is first built, everything is new, clean, and dry, so there are no mould spores in the environment to contaminate the new silicone. The shower can often stay mould free for a number of years if it is well maintained. Over those years however, mould spores will grow in the damp location between the tiles and the waterproofing membrane, and it is impossible to remove it fully when silicone is replaced as part of a shower restoration.  This means that subsequent silicone replacements may not stay mould free for as long as the original installation.

We have found that silicone in a shower typically requires replacement every couple of years, but can require more frequent attention.

  • What kind of grout is best for a wet area such as a shower?

Epoxy grout is recommended in wet areas as it is waterproof and much more resistant to staining. We regrout shower bases with Epoxy to provide the longest lasting solution. Grout on shower walls can be protected using our Colourseal grout sealer, which provides similar protection to Epoxy grout but with no regrouting required (which eliminates any chance of minor damage to the tiles).

  • Can you fix a broken tile?

This really depends on the extent of the damage. Small chips and cracks can be disguised so they are much less noticeable, but larger damage requires us to replace the tile.

  • Why can’t I get the water marks off my shower glass?

Water spotting is caused my minerals such as calcium, lime, and iron in the water supply fusing to the microscopic pores of the glass. This happens when the water droplets are left on the glass after showering – the water evaporates leaving the minerals. Over time these minerals block the clarity of the glass. Specialist abrasive products (and a lot of elbow grease) are required to remove these minerals without damaging the glass. In most cases we can restore 80%-90% of the clarity, but occasionally the glass is unable to be restored.
The best way to minimise water marks is to dry the glass after each use.
