Types of damaged tile and grout

Tile and grout can become damaged in a number of ways: from poor initial installation, movement in the structure, and dropped items . We can often disguise minor damage, and if damaged beyond repair, we can remove and replace with a new spare tile, or new grout. Here are some types of tile and grout damage you’ll typically come across:

Cracked or chipped tiles

Cracked tiles typically occur due to the impact of heavy objects such as pots and cans being dropped on the tiles, the usage of low-quality tiles, improper subfloor installation, incorrect cutting and handling during installation, variations in environmental conditions, and so on.

Loose tiles

Loose floor tiles can be a result of improper adhesive application, moisture intrusion, or temperature fluctuations. These unstable tiles not only affect aesthetics but pose safety risks as they could be prone to cracking if weight and pressure are excessively added to the loose side. Addressing the issue involves reapplying a suitable adhesive or addressing underlying moisture problems, ensuring a flat, secure, and long-lasting tiled surface.

Buckled tiles

Buckled tiles arise from temperature shifts, moisture, or improper installation, causing the tiles to push against one another, leading to unsightly “tenting” on floors. It’s essential to address the root cause, whether it’s subfloor moisture or insufficient tile expansion joints, and then relay the tiles securely, ensuring a smooth and resilient surface.

Cracked or missing grout

Cracked or missing grout is usually caused by movement of the sub-structure. This could be due to poor installation, earthquakes, or the wrong type of grout used for the application.

Soft or crumbly grout

Grout that has become soft or crumbly can be caused by poor installation, the incorrect product being used, excessive moisture, or harsh cleaning techniques.

Why choose us for tile and grout repair services?

GroutPro is New Zealand’s original tile and grout repair and maintenance company founded in 2009, with hundreds of years of combined knowledge. Damaged tile and grout repair experts

With years of experience, our tile and grout repair specialists can repair, replace, or restore all types of tiles, including ceramic, porcelain, mosaic, and natural stone. Whether it’s a small tile chip repair or a full cracked tile replacement, we’ve got the skills to get it right the first time.

Why engage a tile and grout repair specialist?

Tile and grout repairs may seem simple, but they can go badly wrong if done incorrectly. You may only have one spare tile, or there could be a waterproof membrane or underfloor heating beneath your broken tile and grout. Without the right expertise, you could end up causing more damage than you fix, which is why it’s best to leave it to the professionals.

No matter the extent of the damage, our team can assess your tiled area and provide the best repair solution. Get it done properly, efficiently, and with zero hassle.

FAQ

  • What if I don’t have a spare tile to replace my broken one.

Unfortunately we are not magicians. You would need to find something that you are happy to live with, otherwise it may require a complete retile of the area.  It may be possible to disguise a crack or missing piece if all else fails.

  • What is epoxy grout?

Epoxy grout is a resin based grout that is waterproof and stain resistant. It is much more resistant to the harsh environment in a shower than traditional cement based grout. More difficult to install that cement based grout, many tilers do not like using it, but GroutPro are specialists in its application.

  • Can you fix a broken tile?

This really depends on the extent of the damage. Small chips and cracks can be disguised so they are much less noticeable, but larger damage requires us to replace the tile.
